Nepal
Broadcasting Initiative
The United
Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Equal Access, a non-governmental
organization, are implementing a regional project in Asia that pilots
the use of digital satellite-based technology to deliver development
information to underserved communities. The project aims to bring
positive change by enhancing access to development information through
digital satellite-based radio communication. Nepal is the first country
to go operational, and the initial area of focus is HIV/AIDS awareness
and prevention and the empowerment of women and girls. The Center
for AIDS Prevention Studies, University of California, as part of an
'Assessment & Monitoring Group', provides technical assistance to
the Valley Research Group (VaRG) of Katmandu. The goal of the
Assessment & Monitoring Group is to determine the impact of the
project on HIV knowledge, attitudes and behavior (KAB) of participants
and to independently assess the overall efficacy of the project before
it is replicated in other Asian countries.
World
Bank Technical Assistance
Institute for
Global Health and CAPS personnel (Dr. Tom Novotny, Dr. Lynae Darbes,
and Ms. Lisa Garbus) provide technical assistance to a variety of World
Bank projects, primarily in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
These have included writing significant portions of World Bank position
papers and policy analyses on HIV/AIDS in that region, noncommunicable
disease control, and financing of public health within health systems
reform projects, as well as participating in project preparation for
health reform projects in Latvia, Serbia, Hungary, and Georgia.
